I sat down with my friend Liz the other day and we discussed the state of the world. 

OK, not really.  Sounds a lot better than “we gossiped about our friends.”

Which we totally did.

You see, we have a few chronically single male friends and see the mistakes they make and wanted to have a way to tell them about it.  We were initially going to just send an anonymous email or three, and then decided we would better the world by telling all the guys out there the little things that they might be overlooking.

We’re not saying that what we’re about to tell you will fix everything.  We’re just saying it couldn’t hurt.

And gentlemen?  Don’t worry.  While we’re starting out picking on you, ladies will be getting their turn.

To our guy friends who inspired this idea:  Thank you.  Now listen up!

Tonight, I watched them both.

Started out with Empire Records (Remix! Special Fan Edition) in all its quotable awesomeness.

Moved on to High Fidelity because it just seemed like the logical follow-up.

I highly recommend both movies and watching them together. You will want to fill your MP3 player by the time you are done.

However, I also know that there are a lot of great single men out there who have no idea why they are still single.

I think the problem is that these men just don’t know how to market themselves properly. You can sell damn near anything if you package it the right way and position it to the right buyer. I think some of these men just need help with their packaging and their positioning.

At least, that’s what my friend Liz and I decided the other night over dinner. We were discussing a few mutual male friends and noticed that they both just weren’t aware of a few things that are blindingly obvious to the female eye.

One guy is proud of the fact that he can still wear clothes that he wore in high school. Dude just turned 30.

Another guy took a girl out to dinner and a movie and was thrown off when she thought of it as a date and he thought of it as two friends just getting together and hanging out.

Both men have potential, they just aren’t aware of it or how women are looking at them.

Liz and I want to change that.

We’re also aware of the fact that women probably aren’t showing their best sides to men, either. We plan to change that, as well.

I’ll be creating another blog soon where we will start posting our suggestions to the world. Does anybody have a name suggestion, tagline suggestion or even just a general suggestion of what we can add to the blog?

I was so worried that what happened to Kevin Smith would happen to me.

I was going to get on here and rant about it for a bit, but Kate Harding from Salon.com has written the response that I wanted to say.

I’m going to go see Kevin Smith when he comes to town next month. I’m betting he won’t be flying Southwest to Kansas City.

I am no longer a fan of you.

I remember that I used to watch all NBC, all the time. If I liked a show, there was a 90% chance it was on NBC. You were my favorite network. I made fun of people who watched shows on other networks.

We’ve been drifting apart. I’m not sure what caused the split, but I suspect reality TV had a hand in it. I remember when all the networks were going nuts on the idea that they could make highly rated shows for so danged cheap. I sympathize–I too enjoy getting the most bang for my buck. But the other networks picked concepts that did not completely suck and they kept up or improved the quality of their scripted shows.

You, NBC, picked shitty reality TV concepts and continue to pick shitty reality TV concepts. The Sing Off? Seriously?

I’ve gone from centering my TV schedule around looking for the peacock in the corner of my screen to only watching one show on your network.

One.

And you almost cancelled it.

I’m talking about Chuck. Now that it’s in the third season and doing well, I feel good talking about it, but it was touch and go for a while there.

Now, I am not a huge fan of late night television. If I happen to be channel surfing at the right time, I’ll stop on a show. If I know that an individual I like (actor, author, whatever) will be on a show, I’ll watch/record it.

I’m not going to deconstruct the handling of the transition from Leno back to Conan. That’s been done to death. I’m not even going to keep my rant going because frankly, you are no longer worth it.

I’m breaking up with you, NBC. Now, I’ve made friends with Chuck and I plan to keep him, but the rest of it? Eh. You’ve shown in your programming choices that you don’t care about me or my generation.

Fuck you, NBC.
