Display or Disguise?

One of my goals for quite some time has been to make my apartment look like an adult lives here. While I’m getting there, it can sometimes feel like I’m never going to get there.

I’m trying to get rid of items I was gifted or bought secondhand for a low price because they were functional, but they’re not something I’d pick out. In related news, if you’re in the area and you’ve been wanting a coffee table, chairs, a bookcase, or a broken TV, just let me know.

One of the things I’ve been struggling with is what to do with my belongings. Should I put everything on display and try to keep it tidy all the time? Or should I be getting cabinets and drawers and hide as much as I can? I’m leaning towards displaying most items, but that also means keeping things neat and tidy, two words that I don’t identify with very well.

I know some things makes sense to not keep out all the time–cleaning supplies, my crockpot, dirty laundry, etc. But what about things like jewelry, nail polish, yarn and office supplies? Is keeping it visible clutter or is it inspiration?

As you can see, I tend to swing wildly between “everything has a place and that place is cleverly hidden!” and “look at everything I have styled my life so nicely I can put it all out” with a healthy dash of bright colors and patterns.

How have you handled your evolving decorating style? Do you have any good tips for me on what’s best kept out vs. what’s best kept hidden?

  1. You hit the nail on the head. I see photos of “minimalist” bathrooms with clean counters and all I can think of is where is the toothpaste kept? Where is their “stuff”? I don’t have an answer for my “stuff” on the counters.

    1. I’m sure part of it is just that the “stuff” is cleared away for photo shoots. I have heard of some people actually decanting their various bathroom products into fancy jars and pots so everything goes, but what a pain!
